ELECTRICS: Study Says "Fast Charging" is Key to EV Success
Wednesday, July 28th, 2010
A study conducted among current and future hybrid vehicle owners in California found that fast charging of EV batteries is key to their acceptance.
The results of the study, which was conducted by the Electric Power Research Institute, indicate that 95% of the respondents said they would prefer to charge their EVs at home. A simple, three-prong plug using a 120-volt outlet is preferred over 240-volt recharging units.
Nearly half of the current hybrid owners and one third of the non-hybrid owners said that public fast-charging capabilities of 10 to 15 minutes would have a strong influence of their adoption of EV technology. Some 75% said they would pay a premium of up to 33% for a fast-charging vehicle.
